My lovely Aunt called to share a sermon she heard. The preacher played the popular Beatles song, “Hey Jude.” The line that struck her was, “Take a sad song and make it better.”
Death is sad. Very sad. It is devastating; mind, body, and soul shaking.
Don’t run away from the sadness and cover it up with things that will eventually fade away. Go into the sadness. Feel the sadness. Sit in it for as long as you need. Give yourself Grace to mourn and to weep.
I feel like this is hard for mothers. We want to hold our families together. To do that, we must maintain strength and poise. We must continue to be “a pillar carved to beautify a palace.” (Psalm 144:12)
Don’t do that. Do not stuff your pain down and run from it for the sake of strength. Because, you will be girded with strength. God will give you a strength you have no control over. He will uphold you with His right hand.
Instead, take the sad song and make it better.
Reflect on your deep sadness and find the good. Good is in there:
The stories of people that your loved one impacted.
The way your loved one made you feel with their smile.
The deep connection you shared with your loved one.
The way your own God-given strength is making a difference in the lives around you.
Coming face to face with reality that has opened your eyes to many spiritual truths.
Feel it, find it.
